Self Inflicted Obesity 

You’ve heard the term self-inflicted. What image does this term conjure inside of your head? Are they bad things? Something you can quickly point the finger at and say that was the point at which things went wrong? You hear the term being used all the time, but what does it mean for an individual to have a self-inflicted issue? 

The definition of self-inflection is caused by oneself. This indicates that something was caused intentionally or unknowingly by one’s self. But with this definition, it can also be something good caused by oneself both knowingly or unknowingly. In fact, if you think of it, everything you do in life results in some form of self-inflection, both good and bad. But for the most part, people tend to only think of the bad things that happen as the term self-inflection.  

When it comes to life, everything that you do builds upon self-inflection. Let’s think of it in a good way first and that a person makes healthy choices, exercises, maintains a good lifestyle, and is rewarded with a healthy body that performs well. In this case, this scenario did not happen by chance but rather through the course of thought-out well-planned disciplines to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Going to the gym and exercising multiple times a week requires thought and discipline, eating well, and maintaining healthy food choices. Doing this for months and even years can result in a fit, healthy body. This process is intentional and, therefore, under the definition of self-inflicted, is caused by oneself.

The same is true for poor health. An individual who eats unhealthy lives a sedentary lifestyle with no physical activity and does not engage in healthy habits can result, and in almost every case, it will result in poor health. The same process was also thought out, or in better terms, there was a lack of thought, which produced poor health results. Using the definition of self-inflicted, which is caused by oneself, can be applied to this scenario as well. However, in this scenario, instead of intentionally going to the gym and thinking of health, the individual did not think of health and wound up in poor condition due to this lack of thought. 

In both of these cases, the result of healthy and unhealthy are self-inflicted by the individual. The difference is that a healthy lifestyle requires intentional thought to be healthy, and the poor health condition is the reverse with lack of study of health with the results showing up negatively. One’s entire life can be racked up as one big self-inflection, with most good results coming from well-planned and well-thought-out activities and poor results stemming from lack of thought and planning. 

Take, for example, the individual that wants to graduate from college. This individual takes the time to plan out the exact steps and course of action required to get into a school, pass all the classes, and graduate with a diploma. The reverse is true for somebody who whines up in a mess and doesn’t realize how they even got there. We’ve all seen it, and this can be as simple as not having your wallet to make a purchase. The person did not plan out the event and is at the counter with no way of making payment. 

Most significant successful events were thought out from history, and the results were planned over a long time. And for the most part, adverse result events just happened until the person realized that they were in a mess. At this point, an individual has to work very hard to figure out and damage control. So self-reflection works for both good and bad results. However, with good results, it is not called self-infliction but rather a job well done. Bad outcomes are summed up as the person did it to themselves, which is the old self-reflection definition. 

Now that this has been brought to light, you should be thanking what events in your life you are not paying attention to that can have a negative impact overall. This falls into a few categories for most people, such as finances, relationships, and health. For this article’s purpose, we will just be talking about health, but you can see where the other two can easily come into play.

Most people just don’t think about their health! It is that simple and obvious as the obesity rate continues to climb and is currently at 42.4% today. Here’s an example of self-infliction with poor health and not thinking long-term. Anyone can go out and eat junk food, fast food, pizza, candy, and most other things that are not healthy for you, and over the short-term, there are little to no effects. The scale will not go up, and blood pressure will not change, cholesterol will be the same level, triglycerides will be normal, A1C levels will be unchanged. Doing this for short periods has little to no effect on the body. But doing this for extended periods will have tremendous adverse effects on the body. After months and years of this, practice will catch up, and all the mechanics in the body will change to a negative response. 

Now problems are starting to set in with this individual who has practiced these poor habits for years. And this person now has to perform damage control and try to work their way out of the situation. This person did not intentionally mean to become unhealthy, but through lack of planning, has become unhealthy. This person notices issues that need to be addressed to maintain a normal lifestyle. Generally, this involves going to the doctor and receiving pills to mask the symptoms. Taking medications and masking the problem does not fix the root cause, just the overlining symptoms in which the person thinks they are fixed, which they are not in most cases. Additional problems stem, and the process repeats itself by taking more pills to mask these new symptoms. 

Some people and even some experts will say that obesity is a self-inflicted disease. This is because individuals do not know the adverse effects of what they’re doing today on their bodies in the future. Some experts have even said that humans cannot think in this manner, and they can only think about today or the near future. This is entirely inaccurate, and that we as humans can think long-term of our health. It is we haven’t been taught to think like this when it comes to our health. 

If you were told that you were carrying too much weight, leading to diabetes, and if the diabetes is left unchecked can lead to kidney failure. This would ultimately put the person on dialysis, shorten their life, and diminish their quality of life. Would this person start thinking more proactively about their health? In most cases, this form of education would send a query to the person to start now and not wait until it’s too late. But the reverse is true if this person is never told that this outcome could happen to them and they have no way of knowing why they should change their behaviors. 

Conclusion

This article aims to have people start thinking about their health so that they can avoid the negative connotation of self-infliction. By thinking of how to practice healthy habits, one can avoid becoming a statistic and being part of society’s mainstream. You only have one body, and it has to be cared for. Let’s start working on a healthier lifestyle today to avoid the so-called self-inflicted health issues of tomorrow from neglecting ourselves. It is as simple as thinking before acting and knowing that every action today has consequences tomorrow. By making better choices today will better the results, or outcome, tomorrow.
