Why People Do Not Talk About Their Weight

Let’s face it; weight is a problem! Not only in the US but around the world. To make matters worse, the problem is getting increasingly worse each day. Yet no one is talking about their weight problems. Why is this? Why is it that this glaring problem facing our society today is not being talked about?

Think of it this way, the most significant health crisis today is obesity, and not much of anything is said about this problem. Weight is the fundamental cause of most of our health issues today! Most people do not think of it this way, but they should. Weight is the leading cause of high cholesterol and high blood pressure, two prevalent health issues today. So how is this problem addressed? With pills that mask the issue by improving the symptoms but not fixing the underlying problem. After that, everything is hush-hush.

So Why Is It That On One Talks About Their Weight?

It is pretty obvious why people don’t talk about their weight. It is an admittance that something is wrong and doesn’t know how to take care of the issue. This can be embarrassing, and no one wants to be embarrassed. No one wants to say I have this problem, as you can see, and for the life of me, I can’t fix it. This is the information age where everything should be able to be found. Just do a Google search and get the answers. Isn’t that what everyone does?

So the problem is two parts. First, there is an admission of an issue which is very hard if not impossible for most. Then, the solution must be found to the problem that works. Does this sound familiar? Have you been in this position? The frustrating part of this story is that more people every day are in this position and just keep quiet, hope for the best, or something will come along and fix everything.

To make matters worse, there’s so much noise out there around weight loss, and most of it is inaccurate. This just causes frustration and more self-doubt to the point that people only give up and go along with the flow. How many different weight loss programs are out there today? And how many are tried to just come up with the same results of zero? If every weight loss program worked, then the world would be thin. Is this the case? No!!

There is such a lack of knowledge out there and just commercialization with trying to sell. This is a trap that anyone can fall into, not get results, and give up. For more about why diets do not work, please read this article. Not to pick on a product, but Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are forms of a diet. How many people join these programs, and are they 100% successful? Yet when someone wants to lose weight and does a Google search, most of the time, a sponsored Ad will be one of these. So many people will signup for one of these programs, try it, some will get results, and the rest will not and most likely give up.

To think about this and retrospect, if there was something out there that worked and got the results that you wanted, wouldn’t you tell everybody about it? Then there would be a lot of talk about this issue. It is human nature to say to others when something is working well for you and keep quiet when it’s not. However, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to weight loss, which causes many more issues. What will work for some may not work for others; therefore, more noise comes into play, and fewer results are generated.

Now think about when you go to the doctor and you are told you should lose some weight. How much information does the doctor really give you? Most doctors are not trained or knowledgeable when it comes to weight loss. Even worse, some of the doctors practicing today are in sad shape themselves. How much information are you going to take from someone that is not practicing what they preach? The good news is there is generally a pamphlet there with general information about weight loss or a resource you can call. But most of the time, this resource is not covered under insurance, so there is little benefit.

So this brings us back to the original question of why people do not talk about their weight. There is an immense amount of embarrassment around this topic. You are saying that you have a problem and that you don’t know how to correct it. Not too many people are going to put their hand up for this. But like if something really works then, everyone would be more inclined to talk about it. Let’s put this in a different light. Instead of how it works for everyone, in which there is no such thing, let’s talk about how weight negatively impacts one’s health. A different approach trying to get results.

Now I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but weight does have a negative effect on the body, and this is universal for everyone. Putting it in this perspective should hopefully get EVERYONE talking. Think about this, someone has a weight problem, but nothing is said. This person goes to the doctor and is told to lose some weight, but no context is put to this, nor is anything done. The most important thing that comes from the doctor is pills to mask the issues. But after that, nothing. From the medical side, the problem is corrected. But this is not a fix, just a bandaid.

Let’s talk about the medical issues that come along with weight issues. Weight is the key component to high blood pressure. The excess weight gets in the way of the blood flow and causes the heart to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body. This is a typical everyday example. If everyone started talking about this exact topic in these details, more focus would be on losing weight. The pills to help with blood pressure focus on relaxing the blood vessels to allow more flow or remove excess fluid to reduce pressure or slow the heartbeat down. In any case, the pills only mask the symptoms and does not fix the problem, which is the excel weight gets in the way. This is just one example. The same goes for high cholesterol, diabetes, high triglycerides, and many other ailments.

This goes back to a lack of education and technical know-how. But when the individual receives the knowledge and truly understands how all this works and embarrasses this knowledge and puts it into practice, then change will occur. The individual with a weight issue will learn how to lose weight and see the enormous weight loss value. I am a perfect example; I was overweight, 30% body fat, on two maintenance meds, and going down the path of more and more problems. I got the knowledge, lost the weight, embarrassed it, and now am off all maintenance meds; feel so much better, and currently teach how to lose weight.

I now enjoy talking about weight and how to correct the problem. This type of person with weight issues should seek out and TALK about weight loss. These people will be very willing to help, give good knowledge that is correct and works. Most of all really want an individual with weight issues to succeed.

Not talking about weight problems and hoping they just will go away is not the case. Even worse, just going to the doctor and getting pills to mask the problem is knowing there is a problem and taking the most comfortable way out. This brings us to another topic or issue, which is losing weight requires effort. However, most people will only put in the effort to see results, and no results will equal quitting. This effort must be efficient and get results; otherwise, this effort will not yield results and end up quitting.

I know this article has gone on for a while with lots of little different points, but the real outcome is that the weight issue needs to be discussed openly. Now with that said, open conversations need to be done with the correct audience. Find those who want to help and know how to do it, seek them out, and work with them. Learn as much as you can and put it into practice. Your health is the most important possession you have, and without it, not much else matters. Invest in your health and your self, and you will see the rewards.
